"It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails."
PJIL drives change in four areas:
We support policy makers, practitioners, and advocates across the country who want to develop or strengthen transparency and oversight mechanisms.
We assess problems related to the health and safety of people in custody, and bring attention to the need for improved conditions of confinement informed by public health considerations.
We provide practitioners and policy makers with guidance on ways to improve the treatment of women in custody.
We advocate for keeping youth out of the adult criminal justice system and for treating youth in custody in a developmentally-appropriate manner.
